Our Story

How it all started...

Liberty Church is 90 years in the making and we celebrate all that God has done! Before we look at where we are going, let's take a moment to look at where we have been...

In July of 1934, during the Ohio District Camp held at Avon Park, Pastor Paul Moore felt called by God to plant a church in Girard, OH. In August of that same year, First Assembly of God met for the first time at the corner of High Street and Myrtle Court, at the Old Christian Church.

It was here that the story began, it was here that the heart for our community  was birthed, and it was here that the story of what God would do in us and through us began!

Then it was time to go... and we obeyed God's calling, and we went. What came next was nothing short of miraculous!

Expanding the vision...

The church put down roots at what was then, in the spring of 1937, the Finnish Temperance Hall Over the next 20 years the church grew and developed under the qualified and faithful leadership of pastors and elders.

But possibly most important… it was during the years we were located here that the heart for missions was birthed… first in the financial support, and then in the sending of Pastor Paul Moore, who planted Liberty Church.

Pastor Moore was called to West Africa and the nation of Upper Volta, now known as Burkina Faso.  He was the first of many people over the decades to sense the call of God for the nations and to leave Girard to go into all the world as Jesus commanded.

Liberty AG has had roots in West Africa ever since. During the 1990’s, Liberty AG would send teams to West Africa to build churches, and in 2021, we sent our own Joe and Cyndi Martin to The Gambia in West Africa. A year later the church would send another team to some of the same sights from the 90’s to continue to build churches and minister in the region. In 2023, we returned to West Africa, this time to the nation of Cote d’Ivoire, to invest in missionaries and to build churches. In 2025, Joe and Cyndi Martin will return to West Africa to the nation of Guinea, becoming one of the first AG missionary teams to work there.

To date, Liberty Assembly of God has given in excess of $1.5 million to missionaries and projects around the world, with over a quarter of a million dollars and 4 missions teams in the last 10 years alone!

This is a heartbeat that started in 1937 and has continued to beat stronger and stronger as the decades have gone on.

But the story doesn’t end here… it continues with another move, this time to Lawrence Ave in Girard, OH…

The next phase...

In 1957, under the leadership of Pastor Delmar Ross, First Assembly completed construction and moved to this facility right here on Lawrence Avenue in Girard.

It was during these years that they continued their fruitful ministry to the community and around the world.

Many of the families that joined the church at this time are still a part of our family today! The history and legacy that was developed through the church during this period is a strong testimony to the faithfulness of God…

But as with any season, the time comes for the seasons to change, and the wind begins to blow…

In 1979, Pastor Fred Schmidt hired a young Bible college graduate to be the youth pastor at Girard First Assembly. Little did anyone realize how meaningful and strategic that hire would be in the life of this church.

In 1981, after 6 years of fruitful ministry, the Pastor Schmidt moved on, and in the pioneering spirit that defines our church, that young youth pastor named John Musgrave became the new lead pastor and Liberty AG moved into a new and prosperous season of ministry!

A New Season...

Pastor Musgrave and his wife Barb were elected to lead First Assembly in 1981, and they brought the church into a new season of fruitfulness.

During Pastor Musgrave’s tenure the church continued to grow and develop, reaching new families and making a difference in the community. Generations were coming together to worship God and reach their neighbors.

It became clear that in 1989 another move would be needed, and the property right here at 6779 Belmont Avenue was purchased. Construction on the current facility began in 1990, and on Easter Sunday, 1991, the congregation dedicated the facility. Additional construction took place several years later and the facility we sit in today has been home to our church family ever since.

It was also during this time that church name changed from First Assembly Girard to Liberty Assembly of God.

The faithful and fruitful ministry of Pastor John and Barb Musgrave lasted over 25 years, and in 2006 they accepted the invitation to join the Ohio Ministry Network as the Church Health Director, a position they held until their retirement in 2023!

And Into the Future...

In 2013, Liberty Church elected Pastor Patrick and Gwen Mitchell to serve as the lead pastors. Under their leadership over the past 12 years, Liberty Church has reached new heights in their global ministries, solidified the church foundation, and have created a place where our community can gather to WORSHIP GOD, MAKE DISCIPLES, AND TRANSFORM THE WORLD!

And we would love to have you be a part of it!
